Google Ads or Meta for a B2B SME: the question comes up as soon as you want to buy visibility, and the two platforms do not do the same job. Google Ads shows an ad to someone typing a search; Meta shows it, on Facebook and Instagram, to someone who was not looking for anything. This comparison starts from that difference to decide where to begin; it adds to our articles on online advertising.
What is the difference between Google Ads and Meta in B2B?
On the Google Search Network, the ad answers an intent: the prospect describes their own need, and you pay to appear on those words. On Meta, you choose an audience, and the ad has to arouse an interest that did not exist a second earlier.
On Google, the ad captures demand. On Meta, it creates it.
In B2B, the gap matters more than elsewhere: someone who types “ambulance scheduling software” is already comparing offers, while someone scrolling through Instagram may have the authority to sign but is not thinking about it at that moment.
| Criterion | Google Ads (Search) | Meta (Facebook, Instagram) |
|---|---|---|
| What triggers the ad | A search typed by the prospect | The profile and interests of the chosen audience |
| The prospect | Is already looking for a solution | Is not looking yet |
| The pitfall | Related searches that have nothing to do with you | Forms filled in quickly, with no real project |
How can you tell whether your customers are looking for you on Google?
Before choosing, measure the demand. Google’s Keyword Planner shows, for each keyword idea, the average number of monthly searches and the top-of-page bid, as a low and a high range. You can set it to a location (a country, a region, a city) and to a language: set it to your own market, not to the whole world.
The method has three steps:
- Note.
Write down the words your customers really use, in their emails and their tenders, rather than the ones in your brochure.
- Measure.
Enter the words you noted in the tool, with your country and your language, then read the volumes and the bids.
- Sort.
Separate the searches that describe a purchase (“software”, “supplier”, “quote”) from those looking for information or a job.
If purchase searches exist, start with Google Ads on those queries: it is the demand closest to a signature. If they are rare, the demand still has to be created, and that is the territory of Meta or LinkedIn.
Can Meta bring in B2B customers?
Yes, when your buyer is recognisable by a profession or a type of company, and when the offer can be understood in a few seconds: a training course, a tool for a specific profession, a trade show. Two settings make the difference in B2B.
The form. According to Meta’s documentation, its lead form ads are optimised for the volume of requests by default. A setting for higher intent adds a step where the person reviews and confirms their answers before sending: fewer requests, but from people who have read what they are sending. For a sale that is signed in a meeting, this is the setting you need, or sending people to the form on your own website, which records each request with its source.
Your website visitors. Meta also lets you reach again the people who have visited your site or taken an action on it, using its pixel, and keep them in the audience for 1 to 180 days depending on the setting. In B2B, this use is defensible: showing a demo page again to someone who has already read it, rather than to a stranger.
This pixel is an advertising tracker. The CNIL’s rules on cookies (the CNIL is France’s data protection authority) require prior consent for personalised advertising trackers and social network trackers: the pixel must only fire after the visitor has agreed, and the audience will only include those who have. Expect it to be smaller than your traffic.
What if the buyer is defined by their job title?
Many B2B purchases are better described by a job function than by an interest: a finance director, a purchasing manager. Two platforms target on these criteria.
LinkedIn. Its ads rely on the data its members declare: according to LinkedIn, job title, company, industry and seniority level. It is the most direct route to a given job function. Before committing to it, compare the estimated cost of a request with that of a Google search on the same need.
Microsoft Ads. Less well known, Microsoft Advertising, the ad platform of Microsoft and Bing, lets you target using LinkedIn profile information: company, industry, job function (sales, accounting, purchasing). This targeting exists for search campaigns, audience campaigns and Performance Max, where it was not yet open to everyone in October 2026. You set a bid adjustment per target: you can bid higher when the search comes from a person whose profile matches. A stated intent and a known job function in the same bid: that is the appeal of Microsoft Ads in B2B.
Watch out
Microsoft Ads’ LinkedIn targeting does not necessarily reach your buyers in France
Two caveats, written by Microsoft. Not all companies, industries and job functions are offered. And its September 2026 updates state that the data behind its LinkedIn company lists excludes users in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland: if you sell in France, check in your account what this targeting actually reaches before putting a budget into it.
How do you choose, step by step?
- Describe the buyer and measure the demand: their job function, their company and the words they use, then the volume of those words in the planning tool, set to your market.
- If the search exists, start with Google Ads, on purchase queries only. Add Microsoft Ads if the buyer’s job function matters as much as their search, and if that targeting reaches your market.
- If it does not exist, test Meta with a higher-intent form and retargeting of website visitors, or LinkedIn if the buyer is defined first by their job title.
- Check the tracking before you spend. Every request must arrive with its source recorded, including the campaign and the page it came from: without it, no acquisition decision is possible.
- Judge on sales, not on forms. Send the CRM stages back to the platform, as detailed in our guide to sending sales from your CRM back to Google Ads, then compare the cost per qualified request after at least one sales cycle.

On Palmora Property, the tag container held one tag and zero events
Palmora Property is a property listings site we work with. The tracking audit inspected this container: a campaign launched on it would have learned nothing about the requests.
Advertising also works as a market test: before translating a site for a new country, a small campaign on its queries, in its language, quickly tells you whether the demand exists and what it costs, where SEO takes a long time to answer.
Where to start
Open the planning tool with about ten words your customers really use: the answer will tell you whether to start with Google Ads, or whether you need to create the demand with Meta or LinkedIn.
To choose the platform and set up tracking before committing a budget, tell us about your market and your customers: we start from what they are already searching for. Once the platform is chosen, our digital marketing in one block offer makes it work together with SEO and the CRM: each signed sale tells the campaigns where to bet.
Frequently asked questions
Can Google Ads work when the tool shows almost no searches?
Sometimes. According to Google, keywords that generate few searches cannot be discovered or forecast by the planning tool. In a narrow B2B niche, the absence of a figure therefore does not prove the absence of demand. Test those terms in a small Search Network campaign, limited to your area, then look at which searches actually triggered your ads before widening it.
Does Performance Max work in B2B?
According to Google, Performance Max opens up the whole Google Ads inventory (YouTube, Display, Search, Discover, Gmail, Maps) from a single campaign, and can complement keyword-based Search Network campaigns. It optimises towards the conversion actions you give it: if the only one is a submitted form, it will look for forms. In B2B, wait until you can import qualified requests before entrusting it with a budget.
What budget should you plan for a first test?
Start from the tool’s figures rather than a round number. The estimated top-of-page bid for your keywords gives an order of magnitude for the price of a click; your current conversion rate tells you how many clicks it takes to get one request. The test budget is the one that buys enough requests to follow several of them through to a sale or a rejection.
Do you need an agency, or should you manage campaigns in-house?
It depends on the time available each week, not on the size of the company. A campaign has to be monitored, if only to exclude useless searches and move the budget towards whatever produces qualified requests. In-house, someone has to actually do it. With an agency, keep ownership of the advertising account and access to the conversion data, so that you can change provider without starting from scratch.
