A lead magnet is what a site offers in exchange for an email address: a guide to download, a template, a tool, access to a replay. The principle has not changed; what has changed is the value of what is offered. A white paper explaining the basics of a subject is now summarised in a single answer by an AI assistant, with no form. Visitors no longer have a reason to give their address to get it.
This article covers what is still worth an address in 2026, what to ask for in the form, what the GDPR says, and what happens after the download so that a contact becomes a customer. It is part of our guide to marketing automation for SMEs.
In short
Generic content is no longer worth an address: an AI assistant gives it in one answer.
What is worth it: a calculation on the visitor’s figures, a template drawn from your practice, a study on your data, an expert’s time.
The form asks for the strict minimum, and newsletter sign-up stays a separate box.
The follow-up matters more than the download: a useful message, then a clear rule for passing the contact to sales.
What changed in 2026
Searches that used to lead to a basic guide increasingly end in an answer written by AI, at the top of the results page. Pew Research Center measured the effect on users’ behaviour:
of visits with an AI summary end with a click on a traditional result
when no summary appears
of visits produce a click on a link cited in the summary
Two consequences for a lead magnet. First, the visitor who reaches your site has often already read the basic answer: they are looking for something else. Second, what you offer must bring what a general answer cannot give, because it depends on you or on them. This shift affects the whole trade, as we describe in AI and digital marketing: what changes for agencies.
What is still worth an email address
What an AI already gives
An introductory guide to a subject
A list of general tips
A glossary, a definition
A report compiling public figures
What depends on you or the visitor
A calculation on their own figures: cost, savings, budget
A ready-to-use template drawn from your practice
A study built on your data or your field work
A person’s time: a short diagnosis, answers to their questions
A few forms that work in B2B:
- The calculator. The visitor enters their figures, the tool returns a result that concerns them. The result appears on screen; the address is for receiving the details or keeping them.
- The template. A requirements document, an evaluation grid, an audit checklist, as you use them with your customers. Its value comes from your practice, not from a compilation.
- The in-house study. Figures only you can publish, because they come from your business, with their method.
- A webinar’s replay and slides. What was said live, with the participants’ questions: we explain how to turn it into a sales channel in B2B webinar: turning it into a sales channel.
- A short conversation. Twenty or thirty minutes with a person who knows the subject. It is the most costly for you, and the only one that answers the visitor’s precise situation.
The right choice depends on your target and your means: a calculator takes a little development, a template mostly takes tidying up what you already do. The year’s marketing plan says which one serves the objective.
What to ask for in the form?
The strict minimum needed to deliver what you promise, and to know who you are talking to. The email address, often the company, sometimes the role. Each extra field must serve something you will actually do: a phone number nobody calls is one piece of data too many. It is also a GDPR principle: Article 5 requires data to be “adequate, relevant and limited to what is necessary”.
Watch out
The download must not depend on newsletter sign-up
The GDPR states, in Article 7, that when assessing whether consent is freely given, utmost account shall be taken of whether the provision of a service is conditional on consent that is not necessary for that service. Deliver the content requested, and offer the newsletter in a separate, unticked box.
Between businesses, the CNIL (France’s data protection authority) accepts that later prospecting messages rest on legitimate interest when they relate to the recipient’s job, they were informed of that use and can object simply; the details are in our method for running an email campaign. Say it under the form, in one sentence: what you will send, and how to stop it.
After the download: what makes a customer
The download is only the start. What follows decides whether the contact becomes an enquiry.
From download to enquiry
- Deliver straight away
The content arrives within the minute, by email or on screen.
- A useful message
A few days later, a tip for using it, signed by a person.
- Qualify
The source, the company and what the contact viewed reach the CRM.
- Hand over
A written rule says when the contact goes to sales, and how quickly they are called back.
Without the last step, contacts pile up in a file nobody opens. With it, salespeople know what the person downloaded before calling them, and can start from their question. Contacts not ready to buy join the newsletter, if they asked for it.
What we chose for our own site
From the field
Twenty minutes rather than a document, and every enquiry with its source
On our offer pages below €6,500, we do not offer a document to download: we offer to check with the visitor, in 20 minutes, that it is the right project, and to tell them if it is not. Since 18 October 2026, every enquiry sent through the form arrives with the visit’s source (campaign parameters, landing page, referring site), and it is stored before the notification email is sent.
That choice comes from our trade: our value lies in diagnosing a situation, not in a general guide. An industrial company selling from a technical catalogue might make the opposite choice, with a calculator or sizing sheets.
How do you know whether a lead magnet works?
Follow the whole chain, not just the number of downloads: page visits, contacts gained, qualified enquiries, meetings, sales. Content that produces many contacts and no enquiries may be attracting the wrong audience. Every link that leads to the page carries its campaign parameters, and the CRM keeps them on the contact’s record: the circuit is described in our guide to automated marketing reporting.
Where to start
List the three questions your customers ask before buying, and ask yourself which one calls for a calculation, a template or an opinion only you can give: that is your first lead magnet. Announce it where your target reads you, starting with the leader’s profile on LinkedIn. For an audience in several countries, adapt it to each market, as our guide to international SEO shows.
To connect the form, the CRM and the campaigns that lead to it, our digital marketing offer tracks each contact with its source through to the sale.
Frequently asked questions
What is a lead magnet?
It is content or a service offered in exchange for an email address: a guide, a template, a calculator, a replay, a short conversation. It turns an anonymous visitor into a contact with whom you can continue the conversation, provided what they receive is worth what they gave.
Is the white paper dead?
The generic white paper, which repeats what can be found everywhere, loses its value against AI assistants’ answers. One that brings your own data, your method or a field study keeps its value, because it cannot be found anywhere else, and readers know they will not get it from a general answer.
Can you require newsletter sign-up to download content?
It is not advisable. The GDPR requires utmost account to be taken, when judging whether consent is freely given, of whether a service is conditional on consent that is not necessary for it. Deliver the content, and offer the newsletter in a separate box that the visitor ticks if they want it.
How many fields should the form have?
As few as possible: the email address, and what you really need to qualify the contact, often the company. Each added field must serve a precise action, and the GDPR requires data to be limited to what is necessary. A field nobody uses afterwards is still data you have to protect.
