Odoo Community or Enterprise: which one to choose?

Odoo Community is free software under the LGPL v3 licence, with no subscription. Odoo Enterprise adds reserved apps (Studio, full accounting, helpdesk, planning), hosting by the publisher and version upgrades, for a per-user subscription. Community suits a sales, purchasing and stock scope; Enterprise a broad scope with integrated accounting.

Odoo presents itself as a single product, but it comes in two editions. Community is free software you install wherever you want. Enterprise is used with a subscription. The choice changes the cost, the possible hosting and what the project will have to build itself.

A note: we present here what the publisher documents and what an installation shows, without claiming on Odoo the track record we have on other tools.

In short

  • Community: LGPL v3 licence, no licence fee, free choice of hosting, core apps.

  • Enterprise: per-user subscription, extra apps, publisher hosting possible, version upgrades included.

  • Full accounting, Studio and several business apps are only in Enterprise.

  • Free community modules close part of the gap, with a maintenance cost.

  • The right choice is made on the written scope, not on the list of apps.

What both editions share

The technical core is common: the database, the module engine, sales, purchasing, stock, CRM, invoicing, the website and the basic shop. A module written for Community works in principle on Enterprise. You can start on Community and move to Enterprise later, keeping the same database.

What the Enterprise subscription adds

According to Odoo’s licence documentation, Enterprise is used under a proprietary licence tied to a valid subscription. In return it brings:

  • reserved apps, including Studio (customise without code), helpdesk, planning, quality, e-signature;
  • full accounting, whereas Community stops at invoicing;
  • the mobile app and a more polished interface on several screens;
  • hosting on Odoo Online or Odoo.sh, and version upgrades done by the publisher;
  • publisher support on bugs in its code.

Version upgrades deserve emphasis. Odoo releases one major version a year, and moving from one to the next means transforming the database. On Enterprise, the publisher handles it. On Community, it is up to you or your provider.

What is left to do on Community

Community is not a cut-down edition: for a sales, purchasing, stock and invoicing scope, it holds up very well. But three topics need planning.

  1. Accounting

    Either separate accounting software connected to Odoo, or free modules from the OCA (Odoo Community Association), to maintain.

  2. Upgrades

    Budget for version upgrades, or stay several years on one version, knowing it will eventually stop receiving fixes.

  3. Hosting

    A server, backups, monitoring, at your expense. See ERP in the cloud or on your own server.

How to decide

Rather Community

  • Sales, purchasing, stock and invoicing are enough

  • Accounting kept in separate software

  • A team or provider able to host and upgrade

Rather Enterprise

  • Integrated accounting wanted in Odoo

  • Need for Studio or reserved apps

  • No wish to run servers and upgrades

The most common trap is to go Community to save the subscription, then rebuild with custom developments what Enterprise would have provided. Do the calculation over three years, upgrades included: our article on the cost of Odoo over three years lists the items, and Customising an ERP safely explains why every development is paid again at every version.

What we advise before choosing

Write your scope first, then tick, for each need, whether it is covered by Community, by Enterprise, or by a community module. Add one line for accounting, one for hosting and one for version upgrades, with their cost over three years. This one-page table is usually enough to decide, and it avoids discovering a gap mid-project. The complete ERP guide places this choice within the whole project, and our CRM and ERP offer prices both editions on your real scope before recommending one.

Frequently asked questions

Can you move from Community to Enterprise later?

Yes. The database is kept and the Enterprise apps are added on top. It is a good way to start small. The reverse, going back from Enterprise to Community, is trickier, because the data of reserved apps no longer has a module to read it.

Is Odoo Community really free of cost?

There is no licence to pay. The cost moves to hosting, setup, modules to maintain and version upgrades. On a small scope it stays low; on a broad scope with accounting, it can exceed the cost of an Enterprise subscription.

Which edition do Brain Plus AI offers use?

The one the scope requires, written during scoping. Our CRM and ERP offer proposes Odoo in three fixed-price tiers, and the choice of edition is part of the quote, with the three-year calculation set alongside.
