“Should we start with SEO or with ads?” The question comes up as soon as a company wants more enquiries from Google, and it often pits two trades against each other that do different things. Search engine optimisation (SEO) builds a presence you own; paid search (often called SEA in Europe, PPC elsewhere) rents a place you give back as soon as you stop paying. Neither is better in absolute terms: the right question is which one fits your situation best, now. This article gives the criteria for placing the first euro; it complements our online advertising guides.
In short
Paid search brings visits the next day and quickly shows which searches sell; it stops with the budget.
SEO takes weeks to months to respond, and what it builds stays.
Start with paid search when time is short or demand needs measuring.
Start with SEO when the site would waste every paid click.
The two feed each other: the searches that sell in ads guide the content.
Two trades, two clocks
Google says it plainly: you cannot buy your place in organic results.
Advertising with Google won’t have any effect on your site’s presence in our search results.
Each channel therefore lives its own life, at its own pace. On the ads side, a campaign runs as soon as its ads are approved. On the SEO side, Google’s starter guide warns that some changes take effect in a few hours and others could take several months, and advises waiting a few weeks before judging.
Paid search
Visits as soon as the campaign goes live
A cost per click, for as long as the campaign runs
Real search terms and their sales, quickly
Visibility stops with the budget
SEO
Effects in weeks or months
A production cost (pages, technical work, links), no cost per click
A presence that accumulates page after page
What is built stays, maintenance included
Our own site shows the SEO clock: when our SEO engine first ran, on 25 August 2026, it had zero non-brand clicks over 28 days in Search Console. Since then, that engine has read the site’s real queries every day and prepared the content that answers them; it is work judged in months, not weeks.
When the first euro goes to paid search
When you need enquiries now
A launch, a new offer, a dip in the order book: paid search is the only one of the two channels that responds within the month. It is sized like a test, with enough budget to get a signal, as our article on the minimum budget that gives a signal explains.
When you do not yet know which searches sell
This is the most underrated use of paid search: a measuring instrument. Within a few weeks, the search terms report shows what people really type, and the enquiries received show which of those searches bring customers. SEO content written afterwards on those queries starts from proven demand, not a hunch. The useless searches you discover along the way are useful too: they become negative keywords.
When the results page leaves little room
On some searches, ads, the map and generated answers fill the top of the page, and the first organic result can end up far below the visible part of the screen. Our article on Google’s AI Overviews details what those answers do to organic traffic; the ads they show are covered in our article on advertising in AI answers.
When the first euro goes to SEO
When the site would waste every paid click
Paying to send visitors to a slow page, a broken form or a vague offer means paying to lose them. Before any campaign, the landing page has to keep the ad’s promise: see why the ad is never the only problem. The fixes that follow (speed, structure, content) also benefit SEO: it is often the same job.
When the site already has impressions it does not convert
Before buying clicks, look at the ones you could win without paying. On an online plush-toy store we work with, Search Console showed 30,673 clicks for 9.08 million impressions, a 0.3% click-through rate on pages ranking in positions 7 to 9. Rewriting the titles and descriptions of those pages is a bounded job, whereas buying the same traffic would be paid for click by click.
When demand builds over time
In B2B, many buyers research for a long time before looking for a supplier: guides, comparisons, pricing questions. Those informational searches rarely sell directly through ads, but content that answers them well works for years. Our method for building an SEO strategy where your customers search starts from those questions.
How to decide, in four questions
Where to put the first euro
- Can the site hold a click?
Fast page, working form, clear offer: if not, the first euro goes to the site.
- Do you need enquiries this quarter?
If so, a narrow campaign on buying searches.
- Do you know which searches sell?
If not, paid search is first a measuring instrument.
- Does the site have impressions without clicks?
If so, rewrite titles and pages before buying traffic.
Once the first euro is placed, what follows is decided on the cost of a customer, calculated through to the sale and compared channel by channel: customer acquisition cost explains the calculation, and our guide to sending CRM sales back to Google Ads the measurement on the ads side.
The two feed each other
Choosing the first euro is not a final choice. The two channels exchange information:
- from paid search to SEO: the searches that sell, the promises that get clicks, the pages that convert;
- from SEO to paid search: solid pages become good landing pages, and searches where the site already ranks well raise a real question, to settle with a test: does the ad bring extra customers there?
The rest of the cluster helps place the following euros:
- The network is not just Google: Google Ads or Meta, LinkedIn Ads, Microsoft Ads, video on YouTube and social media.
- A local business has its own rules, in ads as in SEO: attracting customers within 20 km.
- Automated campaigns need reliable conversions: what Performance Max hides.
- Measurement depends on consent in Europe: Consent Mode explained and retargeting without third-party cookies.
- Ads are tested before being rolled out: how many clicks before concluding, including those written with AI, which must promise nothing false (AI and disinformation).
- The provider is chosen on what it delivers: a Google Ads agency contract and SEO agency pricing.
To find out where your site already loses clicks before buying any, our SEO audit delivers an ordered action plan; to make ads, SEO and the CRM work together, our digital marketing offer connects all three.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between SEO and paid search?
SEO targets Google’s unpaid results by improving the site, its content and its reputation; its effects take weeks or months and last. Paid search buys a place among the ads, paid per click, with immediate effects that stop with the budget. In Europe the second is often called SEA, elsewhere PPC.
Does paid search improve SEO?
Not directly: Google states that advertising with it has no effect on a site’s presence in its search results. But paid search gives SEO valuable information: the real searches that bring customers, which you can then work on as content. That exchange of information is where the two channels genuinely help each other.
How long does SEO take to show results?
According to Google, some changes take effect in a few hours, others could take several months, and it is best to wait a few weeks before judging. A site starting from scratch, without pages answering its customers’ searches, is judged in months rather than weeks. Paid search, by contrast, brings visits from launch.
Can you do SEO and paid search at the same time?
Yes, and it is often the logical next step once the first euro is placed. Paid search covers buying searches and measures what sells; SEO builds the pages that answer questions and eventually bring visits with no cost per click. What matters is judging each channel on the cost of a customer.

Google Ads in B2B: the minimum budget that gives a signal
In B2B, a Google Ads budget that is too small does not just cost little: it tells you nothing. The right minimum comes from your click price, your enquiry rate and the number of enquiries you need to judge.

Customer acquisition cost: calculating it to the signed sale
The cost per lead shown by the ad platform stops at the form. Customer acquisition cost goes all the way to the contract: what goes in the numerator, what you count in the denominator, and the setup that makes the calculation possible.
