YouTube brings to mind consumer brands, trailers and ads you skip after five seconds. For a B2B company, the platform seems beside the point. It is not always: Google lets you show your video on YouTube to people who searched your topics on its search engine. So the question is not “does YouTube work in B2B?”, but “for which video, shown to whom, and judged on what?”. This article answers it; it is part of our online advertising guides.
In short
A skippable ad can be skipped after five seconds, and you only pay once 30 seconds are watched or someone interacts.
The targeting that matters in B2B: people who searched your terms on Google or YouTube, and people who watched your videos.
A video that works in B2B explains or shows; it does not just announce.
A video campaign is judged on the enquiries it prepares, not on the number of views.
What YouTube brings to a B2B sale
A B2B sale is decided over several weeks, by several people. Before filling in a form, the buyer wants to understand: what the tool looks like, who is behind it, what implementation involves. A video answers those questions better than a three-line ad.
YouTube advertising therefore rarely triggers an immediate enquiry. It serves to prepare: to be seen by the right people before they look for a supplier, and to remind those who started watching your demo. That is a different role from the Search Network, which captures demand already expressed, as our comparison of Google Ads and Meta explains.
The formats, and what you pay for
Google’s help page on video formats describes several; three matter for a B2B company.
Google Ads help on video ad formats (French edition), which states for each where it appears and how it is billed. Captured on 19 October 2026.
before the viewer can skip a skippable in-stream ad
watched (or the whole video if shorter), or an interaction: what triggers payment on cost per view
at most for a non-skippable in-stream ad, paid per impression
The skippable format has a valuable property in B2B: someone who skips the ad after five seconds costs you nothing on cost per view. You pay for those who stay, that is, those interested in the subject. Bumper ads (five to six seconds, non-skippable) and non-skippable ads serve awareness rather, and are paid per impression, whether the person is concerned or not.
The targeting that matters in B2B
Broad interest targeting (“business”, “technology”) reaches too many people for a B2B offer. Two settings make the difference.
People who searched your topics
Custom segments let you reach users who searched for certain terms on Google properties, Google Search and YouTube included. In practice: your demo video of scheduling software can be shown on YouTube to people who typed “scheduling software” on Google. Intent expressed on the search engine decides who sees the video. The terms to give are those already selling in your search campaigns; those attracting browsers are removed, as you would with negative keywords.
People who watched your videos
By linking your YouTube channel to Google Ads, you can reach people who watched a video on the channel, subscribed, visited its page or liked a video. It is retargeting based on your own videos: showing the customer testimonial to those who watched the demo. Like any retargeting, it follows consent rules and reaches people who already know you, two points detailed in our article on retargeting without third-party cookies.
Watch out
Job title targeting is not on YouTube
If your buyers are defined first by their role (finance director, head of purchasing), YouTube does not let you target them that way. LinkedIn does, at a different price: see who LinkedIn Ads is worth the price for.
The video that works in B2B
The most effective format is not the most expensive to produce. In B2B, a useful video is often worth more than a brand film:
What prepares a sale
A real demo, with the screen on show
A customer describing their problem and what changed
An answer to a buyer’s question (price, implementation, lead time)
First five seconds that say who the video is for
What gets skipped after five seconds
A spinning logo, music, a slogan
A general promise any competitor could sign
A video that explains nothing before the thirtieth second
An invented testimonial or a generated image pretending to be real
The last point matters: an AI-generated video passing off a fabricated scene as a real testimonial puts your credibility on the line, and the disclosure rules for generated content apply to ads too. We cover this in our article on generated copy and visuals and in our analysis of AI and disinformation.
Judging a video campaign on enquiries
Views are the figure the platform highlights; they are not the one that pays. A B2B YouTube campaign is judged on what it triggers next: visits to the demo page, searches for your brand, enquiries.
From viewer to enquiry, what to measure
- The view
The person watched beyond 30 seconds, the billed figure.
- The visit
They click through to a page that extends the video, tagged with campaign parameters.
- The enquiry
They write or book a call, with the source of their visit.
- The sale
The signed stage in the CRM goes back to Google Ads.
On this site, since 18 October 2026, every enquiry sent through the form keeps the campaign parameters, landing page and referring site of the visit, for the browser tab and without a cookie: a well-tagged video link shows up in every enquiry it brings. The rest, through to the sale, is described in our guide to sending CRM sales back to Google Ads.
Part of the effect will always escape this loop: the person who sees the video, does not click, then searches your name a week later. That is why the cost of a customer is read across all channels, as our article on customer acquisition cost explains.
When YouTube is not the right first euro
- Without a useful video. A campaign does not make an uninteresting video interesting; start with the video that answers the question your sales team hears most.
- Without searches that sell. If your search campaign has not yet shown which queries bring customers, the custom segment has nothing solid to rely on: see the minimum budget that gives a signal.
- Without a page that extends the video. The click must land on a page that keeps the promise: why the ad is never the only problem.
YouTube across the rest of your campaigns
- Performance Max also serves on YouTube, with the videos you give it: what the automated campaign hides.
- The video budget is thought through like a social media budget, on the cost of an enquiry: what budget, what results.
- Microsoft also serves video ads on its audience network: Microsoft Ads for B2B.
- A local video can target an area: attracting customers within 20 km.
- Two videos are compared with the same rigour as two ads: how many clicks before concluding.
- Consent determines retargeting and measurement: Consent Mode explained.
- Ads or SEO: a useful video can also be found without advertising, and the question of the first euro arises here too (SEO or paid search).
- An agency that produces and runs your videos must say who owns the channel and the audiences: what the contract should contain.
- AI answers are becoming another ad placement: what we know.
To decide whether video deserves a share of your budget, and measure it on enquiries, our digital marketing offer starts from what your search campaigns have already learnt.
Frequently asked questions
Does YouTube advertising work in B2B?
Yes, when it has a precise role: showing a useful video (a demo, a testimonial, an answer to a buying question) to people who searched your topics on Google or watched your videos. It prepares the sale more than it triggers it, and is therefore judged on the enquiries that follow, not on views.
How much does a YouTube ad cost?
There is no fixed price: it is an auction. With a skippable in-stream ad on cost per view, Google only charges when the person watches 30 seconds (or the whole video if shorter) or interacts. People who skip the ad after five seconds cost nothing on that basis.
Can you target companies or job roles on YouTube?
Not directly by job title. You target people who searched for certain terms on Google or YouTube, interests, content, or people who interacted with your videos. To reach a specific role, LinkedIn Ads or Microsoft Ads’ LinkedIn profile targeting are more direct.
How long should a B2B video ad be?
Short enough to say within the first five seconds who it is for, long enough to show something useful. A non-skippable ad lasts at most 60 seconds; a skippable ad can be longer, and only those who watch beyond 30 seconds are charged on cost per view.
